5 Myths About a Boudoir Shoot
If you’ve ever thought about booking a boudoir session but found yourself saying “maybe one day…”
..this one’s for you.
As a Birmingham boudoir photographer, I’ve heard it all:
the nerves,
the misconceptions,
the “I could never do that” talk.
The truth is, most of what people think boudoir is… isn’t actually true.
Myth 1: You have to look a certain way to do a boudoir shoot
No. Absolutely not. Boudoir isn’t reserved for models or fitness influencers. It’s for real women: women of every age, size, and background.
As part of The Self Love Experience at She Is Magic, I photograph women from their 20s to their 60s, and every single one brings something beautifully unique to the session.
Boudoir is about celebrating who you are right now - not waiting until you lose a few pounds or hit the gym more. Confidence doesn’t magically appear when your body changes.
It’s something you build - and this experience helps you do exactly that.
Myth 2: Boudoir is just about being sexy
Honestly? It’s about so much more.
Yes, the photos are sensual and stunning, but this experience goes far deeper. Boudoir is about reconnecting with yourself – your confidence, your power, your softness. It’s a celebration of your story, your strength, and your journey.
Many of my clients walk in saying they’re doing it as a gift for someone else… and leave realising they did it for themselves.

Myth 3: You need to know how to pose
That’s my job, not yours. You don’t need to know how to move, where to look, or what to do with your hands - I’ll guide you through everything, from your head to your toes.
I’ll show you exactly what to do, how to breathe, where to look, and how to create those beautiful shapes that make you go “Oh my god, is that really me?”
Even if you’re nervous, I promise you’ll look incredible.
Myth 4: You have to wear lingerie
Not at all. Boudoir is about you, not about what you wear.
Some women love lacy lingerie, others prefer a simple shirt, a silk robe, or even a blazer. You can go full goddess or keep it soft and understated - there’s no right or wrong way to express yourself.
During your session prep, I’ll help you choose outfits that flatter your shape and make you feel confident, powerful, and completely yourself.
Myth 5: You need confidence to do it
This one’s the biggest myth of all.
You don’t wait for confidence to show up - you create it. And that’s what boudoir does.
Most of my clients aren’t confident when they book. They just decide they’re ready to stop waiting. By the end of the session, you’ll see yourself differently - softer, stronger, more at peace with who you are.
Confidence doesn’t come before the session. It’s what you take away from it.
Final Thoughts
A boudoir session isn’t about perfection. It’s about permission.Permission to take up space. To be seen. To celebrate yourself exactly as you are, right now.
If you’ve been thinking about doing a boudoir shoot in Birmingham or the West Midlands, this is your sign to stop waiting for the perfect time - and create your own version of confidence instead.
